@Rubén: I hadn't read that article, but I've already corresponded with Juan several times. And neither of your links answers my question. Or is there something I missed in comments somewhere?

I've seen a friend who speaks only Afrikaans carry on a conversation with a friend who speaks only Dutch quite successfully (with a few giggles over what appeared to be "odd" vocabulary). I don't know if that's evidence of sufficient expertise between the two, but it's enough that I personally need a lot more than "I thought it goes without saying" from a random Internet stranger to be convinced that the two languages and their related expertise are sufficiently different to warrant two sites.

The proposal to split Afrikaans and Dutch may make perfect sense. But not for the reasons you've suggested. The (IMO) only valid reason to separate them is because the experts in one field are not experts in another. And nobody has yet even tried to make this case on this post.

The dividing lines between sites aren't "subject matter"--they are "areas of expertise." And there aren't any "noun experts" who also aren't "verb experts." In the same way there is a huge overlap between Javascript experts and C# experts--many people use both languages professionally on a daily basis, making a huge area of overlap.

Anyone who knows they're related probably would. That would include me.

@Catija: It's rare that I VtC questions like this, but I do almost always comment about the proper use of A51. Even if the question is welcome on the discussion zone, as you imply, that doesn't mean my comments to the effect of "Use the A51 system properly for greater effectiveness" are out of place. I think you're making a big deal out of nothing.

@Catija: I don't have a general issue with the use of the discussion area. I already know how it's intended to work, and believe me, I have downvoted and VtCed as appropriate. I also comment generously about the proper way to find out what's on topic. I'm not the only one.

@Catija: And roughly 98% of those come from people who don't know how Area 51 is intended to work, or are asking about subtle nuances that actually make sense for a discussion rather than for a definition phase question.

@Catija: The Area51 Discussion zone is not meant to serve as a proxy definition phase during the commitment phase. Sure, clarification is meaningful sometimes. But this question isn't asking for clarification on. It's asking a definition-phase question. And perhaps more importantly, it's asking one that can probably be answered, if only by inference, by reading the existing definition questions.

I have no interest in collecting comic books. Nor in reading them and asking about them on SciFi.

I don't know much about comic books, but I do know there's quite an active community of comic book collectors, and I don't think comic collecting is even remotely on topic on SciFi.SE.

I don't believe that "questions will be either specifically about Dutch or specifically about Afrikaans" is a meaningful litmus test. We'll have questions specifically about nouns and questions specifically about verbs, too. That doesn't mean we need separate "Dutch Nouns" and "Dutch Verbs" sites.

I agree that English is not a good analog for the situation between Dutch and Afrikaans, but I don't think that proves that Afrikaans and Dutch can't co-exist on a single site. It's really up to this community whether it can be made to work. There are other proposed sites which include multiple languages. I don't know if those will (or can) ultimately succeed... but I guess my point is: The decision to accept both languages really is our own, and needn't be determined by some "rule" about how other sites are handled.
