Proposal: iOS Jailbreaking Development

I believe this topic is far too small and more suited for a wiki than a SE site.

As mentioned in the announcements, the information is rapidly changing as new APIs/holes are opened and closed. This means that old questions/answers will become irrelevant very quickly - and will constantly need to be deleted/edited to keep the information correct.

In addition to this, the possible number of topics seems very small for such a niche topic.

I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of others?

All your reasons why IJD is not suited to a SE Q&A are reasons I think it would be perfect.

Velocity of change

iOS does not change that quickly. And with Apple current release schedules private API will probably change about as often as public ones.

Irrelevant Questions

This site will be populated by iDevice hackers, they will want to hack a myriad of hardware and software. Question and Answers will almost certainly have to be tagged with appropriate iOS version and hardware models. But I feel this is a SE strength not a weakness.

Scope

  • 5 iOS releases
  • 5 iPhone models
  • 4 iPod touch models
  • 2 iPad models
  • Apple TV

That is a lot of software and hardware, not all hacks work on all of them, this would be a great place to document that. I dis agree that information would be mutable, APIs in 4.3.2 on a iPhone 3G will not change, and just because it's not the latest does not make it irrelevant.

Conclusion

I agree this site will be smaller that others and it will have elements more akin to a wiki. But not every sites on the network should be a carbon copy of Stackoverflow.com.

There is nothing else on the internet that would come even close to this.

I can definitely see your point, but I have to admit I'm unconvinced. I'd be more behind an idea for jailbreaking any mobile device - It would be of benefit to more devs/hobbyists. I definitely take your point re: versions and mutability - SO deals with this already. – Basic Feb 8 at 10:54

I'm not against to widening the scope to include other devices, but would that suffer form the Gadgets.SE problem? Installing Android on your iPhone or iOS on your Xoom would be valid here… – rjstelling Feb 8 at 11:36

I agree that we wouldn't want it to end up as the "misc" SE site where all the unanswerable tech-related Qs end up, but I believe the "Jailbreaking" title will avoid that - of course, now I'm arguing against myself saying to was too niche :) It's a tricky one – Basic Feb 8 at 13:08
Have you committed? I'd like it if you did because you can help drive it in the right direction. It only beta after all, it might fail and that's OK. – rjstelling Feb 8 at 14:10

I hadn't but have now. Here's hoping we can get something out of beta which will be of use. – Basic Feb 8 at 14:13
If iOS Jailbreaking is designed for "iDevice Hackers," maybe it should be combined with the Hackers proposal. – tyjkenn Mar 10 at 1:10
