Proposal: Hebrew Language & Usage

There are arguments both for and against welcoming questions on other Jewish languages, such as Judaeo-Arabic, Talmudic and Biblical Aramaic, or Ladino (not Yiddish, it's got its own proposal).

For:

  • They are linguistically related, and share many words.
  • Experts in Biblical and Rabbinical Hebrew will often be familiar with Aramaic.
  • They are commonly written with the Hebrew alphabet.
  • They are unlikely to ever get their own sites.

Against:

  • They're different languages.

So, should we allow questions on Jewish languages?

As the starter of this proposal, what you're suggesting was not my initial thought.

I wanted a site to help with (specifically) the Hebrew language, I think that a better option would be to open a proposal for Jewish languages as a whole, it would seem more appropriate.

Yes, your arguments are convincing.

No. If you want a "Jewish languages" SE site, that can be done instead, but then it needs that name. Ladino and the like have nothing to do with Hebrew (besides orthography and loanwords).

And what about Aramaic? – HodofHod Jan 29 at 19:28

@HodofHod, Aramaic is of course related to Hebrew (as is Judeo-Arabic, another Semitic language), but still a separate language, so that it does not belong on a "Hebrew" site IMO. – msh210 Jan 29 at 19:30
