On several of the language related sites questions pop up that have the form "Are these two homophonous or near homophonous words related?" (one example that popped up recently) and intuitive ascriptions of etymology are popular when it comes to Hebrew. At the same time, legitimate etymologies may be hard to come by.

Would such questions require some external evidence for the link between words in order to be acceptable, or would similarity in sound and meaning be sufficient as motivation/evidence?

Proposal: Hebrew Language

My inclination would be that no original or unsourced etymologies are allowed. If you can find it in a published lexicon or dictionary, then go ahead and cite it.
