Proposal: Collectibles

First off, I'm not sure superset is the right word.

To the point, are there any questions that could not be asked in other proposals? E.g, say you're a collector of guns, would these questions not fit in at Firearms?

Here are some other proposals that perhaps could answer collectible-related questions:

Do we really need an own proposal just for collectibles? Could they not be incorporated in new and already existing proposals?

I meant it to be more of a catch-all for anything that might not get it's own proposal. For example there are people that collect signs, cans, doll houses, bottles, etc. There are so many different things that people collect that having a separate SE site for each probably wouldn't work, but together they have the potential to work well.

Also, if you'll notice asking the value of a firearm is specifically Off-Topic, but a question of authenticity was close to on-topic, but there were no on-topic questions specifically related to collectivity.

And, so far in the Art History proposal the one question that even comes close to asking about collectivity has 1 off-topic vote currently.

I'm not sure how Art History was brought into the discussion. Some people collect art, but the history of art is much richer than simply valuating something for auction. There's always going to be a minute amount of overlap between some of the sites, but I don't anticipate Art History draining users away from collectibles. – jonsca Jul 29 '11 at 11:42
@jonsca, yeah part of the inspiration was that there are some sites that could fall into this category, but the subject of cellectability isn't really touched in the proposal. – DForck42 Jul 29 '11 at 14:45
Also, the proposal could be used for the discussion of what makes something collectable and other questions related to collecting that isn't necessarily about a specific item or item group. – DForck42 Jul 29 '11 at 14:52

I would think specific "collectors" SEs are better - it would seem the odds of being an expert at coins, stamps, documents, coke memorabilia, etc, etc, etc would be slim-to-none.

And from personal observation, folks that truly "collect" something, don't typically collect more than a couple things.

I don't think that you need to have everyone be an expert on every topic; you just need enough experts on each qualifying topic to provide quality answers to the questions you get. It may be the same as Board and Card Games vs. Go, Chess, etc. – Dave DuPlantis Aug 11 '11 at 14:57

@warren: A lot of people collect several sorts of things. I therefore think their audiences likely overlap substantially. – Mechanical snail Aug 18 '11 at 23:11
