The problem with Natural Language Processing is that this topic is currently spread over at least 4 sites of the Network, including Stackoverflow, Data Science, Cross Validated and Linguistics.

Since I am new to Area 51: Should I propose a site for Natural Language Processing to concentrate all questions and answers in one place?

And Computer Science. Dammit, what are we doing wrong so that people so often forget Computer Science? – Gilles Jun 23 '15 at 21:37

There is no harm in proposing.

There is a new Minimum Activity Requirements for Area 51 rule that comes into its own tonight (June 18, 2015) you might want to wait a couple of days to see how it develops before moving forward with your proposal.

When you do make it you will want to have a strong argument (along the lines in your question should be fine) as to why it should have it's own site.

There has been a proposal for Computational Linguistics about a year ago, I supported it but looks like nothing changed since then. Maybe there was not enough ppl which is very surprising (probably because nobody knows about area51 in the first place). NLP should have a separate site and it's a shame for stackexchange not to have it. As a result now it is well spread over several sites.

Definitely I shall support and invite ppl in case you propose.

It is difficult to know for sure what you have in mind until you submit the proposal with a title, description, and some example questions. But on the surface of it, our Data Science site was created specifically for subjects like this, and our Cross Validated "statistics" site covers this as well. It seems likely that I would have to close this as a duplicate of another site.

The problem with NLP is that it's spread thin between SO, CS, DS, CV, Linguistics… There isn't a single site that covers all NLP topics. It's similar to Cryptography, even a bit worse. – Gilles Jun 23 '15 at 21:38
Since you (SE) insist on effectively forbidding interdisciplinary questions posted to multiple sites, why do you speak against interdisciplinary sites? (Not that I think a multitude of narrow-scoped sites is a good idea, but currently some folks have no place to ask their questions.) – Raphael Jun 24 '15 at 9:39
Data Science, Cross Validated are not and should never be considered as a substitute for NLP. I repeat, Data Science is not Natural Language Processing, Cross Validated is not Natural Language Processing. NLP is a huge field on its own and can be subcategorized as well. Why on earth ppl keep confusing NLP with Data Science is beyond me. – minerals Oct 31 '16 at 10:26
