Proposal: Vi and vim

I haven't seen this question before: Will it be or I would personally prefer vim since it's the name under which the software is known more, and as well, 2-letter name would be a bit too short to me.

(I know that UX.SE has a 2-letter name, but I don't like that either. However, they didn't have a much better choice. We do.)

Quack! Ducks invading other sites! :) – Paulo Cereda Jan 23 '15 at 18:52

Probably should depend on if we welcome other vi clones. If we welcome nvi, elvis, levee, etc., then those aren't vim. But they're all descendants (spiritually at least) of vi.

Existing example: the vast majority of questions on Unix & Linux ( are about Linux, but it uses the more generic term as its URL.

[Ok, in reality, not that important. As long as they don't go for]

This option also has the super cool shorthand potential: VI.SE :) – JohnB Jan 23 '15 at 23:37
I think we welcome them (that's what I understand). But it IMHO needn't mean we can't be vim.SE. I stated my opinion, VI.SE seems more popular, and I'm in the end quite fine with it :) – yo' Jan 24 '15 at 13:43

I agree it should be vim. Any vi question will be just as relevant to vim, but the reverse is not true.

I think there is room for specializing within the overall topic. If many flavors of vi are allowed on the site, then your specific question about vim can be tagged as such with no problem. – Aaron D Jan 24 '15 at 18:51
