Proposal: Knots

Are there so many questions about knots? Probably there is a lot but I doubt there is enough to sustain a healthy Q&A site. Maybe a merge with another proposal? Scouting? Or the possible new The Great Outdoors?

Too narrow and too difficult to explain in words. As ABOK shows, visual aids are everything. – m0untain Jan 26 at 6:25

I think we should close it, but I will hold off my close trigger finger until the community decides.

I believe the use of knots is too diverse to be merged into any one category, but you may have a point about the subject being too small to sustain a site.

Let's see how the votes go.

There would be a lot of questions to go with knots, but once they are answered, there is just going to be duplicate content. It would not last very long. Its not like there are new knots everyday. I have tons of questions about knots, but they would best be answered by me going to a niche site about knots, or going to the library.

Personally I think a merger with the great outdoors wouldn't be a bad thing - we've had a couple of knot tying questions there already, and the outdoors generally calls for a knowledge of a broad range of knots.

Those questions which are knot (sorry, couldn't help it) really on scope for the outdoors could fit in elsewhere - "what's the best knot to mend my washing line" for instance could come under home improvement / diy.

Knots probably is too narrow a subject area to work with... or perhaps to diverse in terms of overlapping with other subject areas. Sailing? Fishing? Rigging? Climbing? Abseiling? Camping? Tying your shoes? (Has anyone dared propose a shoes area - my wife would spend YEARS on THAT one! :P)

The point is that it's not one of those subject areas that is really all that broad in terms of skills... more in terms of application. Rather than subsuming it entirely into a single area (such as great outdoors), it would probably exist better as a tag linked to a number of sites where it would be recognized as a legitimate topic, unique and yet not entirely unique to each site.

ABOK and IGKT suggest that the topic is broad enough for its own site.
